TAWHID.

What is Tawhid?
Tawhid is the concept of 'monotheism' in Islam. (Belief in only one God, which is Allah. Therefore basically the oneness of Allah.

How do Muslims remind themselves of Tawhid?
Muslims say: "There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is his prophet" to remind themselves of Tawhid. In the Qu'ran the phrase is written in these words:

"He is God, one, The Self-Sufficient Master, He beggets not nor was he begotten; and there is none co-equal or comparable unto Him."

Definition of the word 'Tawhid'
in Arabic the word 'Tawhid' means: unification and asserting oneness

Is Monotheism the only way to describe Islam?
Even though Monotheism is a way of describing Tawhid, there are different levels in the concept of 'One God'. Muslim scholars often divide Tawhid into 3 main categories:

  • Belief in Allah's almighty lordship
  • Belief in Allah's divine nature
  • Belief in the names and attributes of Allah

Brief Explanations on all of the 3 categories:
Belief in Allah's almighty lordship (aka) Tawheed Ruboobiyyah: Muslims believe that Allah is the creator and the only one capable of giving and taking life. Everything is made by Allah. Some quotes from the Qu'ran: "Allah created all things and He is the agent on which all things depend." (Az-Zumar 39:62) and "Allah created you and whatever you do." (As-Saffat 37:96).

Belief in Allah's divine nature (aka) Tawheed Uloohiyyah: Since in Islam Allah is the only God, only he is worthy of being worshipped. Each Muslim is supposed to develop his/her own connection to Allah by praying directly to him or by other acts of worship such as: charity for example. Worship should be accompanied by full submission and obedience to Allah.

Belief in the names & attributes of Allah (aka) Tawheed Al-asma'wa Sifaat: There are in total 99 names of Allah which describe his all-powerful attributes. However God only refers to himself with one name: Allah. Some of the names which describe his attributes are:
Ar-Rahim = The Most Merciful
Ar-Wahid = The One/ the Unique
Al-Khaliq = The Creator
